Sarah Carter For Lexington School Committee
My Positions
-
Building a New LHS
I fully support the plan to build a new high school as proposed. We need a new high school for 3 reasons: Failing Infrastructure, Lack of adequate space to meet educational needs, and Security. The preferred design selection, Bloom, will remedy all 3 of these issues at the lowest cost, in the least amount of time, and with the least disruption to our student body.
-
Appropriate Space for Special Education Students
I will encourage our administration to continue working to address the space issues that impact our SPED programs, especially the Intensive Learning Program (ILP). Currently, families who enter our district can wait weeks or even months for their student to be placed in our Special Education programs. We can do better to ensure that all of our students are getting the education they need.
-
Student Cell Phone Policy
As the School Committee works to revise our cell phone policy, I will push for a policy that is inclusive of all our learning spaces, K-12. Parents are worried about cell phone and smartwatch use both in classrooms and during unstructured time (recess, bus transport, lunches). As a member of the School Committee, I will work to create a community informed plan to ensure that we are providing guidance and support to our young people in how they interact with technology.
-
Innovative Curriculum and Instruction
I support enabling teachers and departments across LPS to explore new ideas in delivering our educational program. I encourage the administration to provide time and resources for staff to bring new curriculum ideas and teaching models into our classrooms, providing robust learning experiences for our students.
-
Thoughtful Evaluation
An important component of supporting innovation is evaluation and assessment. It is challenging to improve and grow if we do not take the time to gather feedback and reflect on whether new policies and ideas have achieved the stated goals. I will work to ensure that effective evaluation processes accompany growth and change.

Mental Health
Ensuring that we support our students as they move through the school system, is something that all members of the Lexington community know must be a priority. It is imperative that we consider how policies will affect the social and emotional development of our students
